Time to Update EEOC & CHRO Workplace Posters & Employee Handbooks!

Written by The Human Resource Consulting Group | Aug 22, 2023 11:07:00 PM

The EEOC and CHRO have both updated or released new posters in the past year. It's important for employers to ensure they meet the compliance requirements for updating their workplace posters and employee handbooks.

EEOC "Know Your Rights" Poster

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has replaced the "EEO is The Law" poster with the updated new "Know Your Rights" poster in October 2022. The new poster includes updated information on the Federal laws preventing workplace discrimination.

CHRO Domestic Violence Poster for Connecticut Employers

The Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities (CHRO) released a new domestic violence poster for Connecticut employers. A victim of domestic violence is now a protected class, making discrimination or harassment based on this status illegal. Employers are required to provide leave of absence for employees struggling with domestic violence. This makes it an ideal time to add provisions to your employee handbook to ensure compliance.

Where Should the Posters be Placed?

The posters should be positioned in a location accessible to all employees. Like FMLA and EPPA posters, the EEO poster must be placed where applicants for employment and current employees can see it.

What About My Remote Employees?

If your employees are remote, they must also have access to the poster in a conspicuous spot. It can live on your website or your Isolved (HCM platform), along with other essential documents. Employees should be made aware that it is there.

What Happens if I Don’t Comply?

Employers are subject to fines for noncompliance. Also, not posing it poses a liability to business owners if an employee takes action against you.

What is New on The EEO Poster?

The new “Know Your Rights” poster:

  • Uses straightforward language and formatting
  • Notes that harassment is a prohibited form of discrimination
  • Clarifies that sex discrimination includes discrimination based on pregnancy and related conditions, sexual orientation, or gender identity
  • Adds a QR code for fast digital access to the "how to file a charge" webpage
  • Provides information about equal pay discrimination for federal contractors
